Addo from Cape Town and the Garden Route

On a combination tour, Addo is usually a few hours. For a real safari day, plan it at the end of the route.

Addo Elephant National Park lies at the eastern end of the Garden Route, close to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) — too far from Cape Town for a day trip. Travellers reach it either on a multi-day tour from Cape Town that combines the Garden Route with Addo, or on their own road trip that ends in Gqeberha, with a safari day added there.

Both work, but they give you very different amounts of Addo. If a proper game drive in the park is the point, the safaris below are the ones to look at; the combination tours are compared on our sister site.

Combination tours: Addo as a side trip

The Garden Route tours from Cape Town that include Addo run for five or six days. Along the way they visit the coast, the forests and the towns of the Garden Route, and Addo appears on one day of the itinerary — typically as a game drive of around two to three hours rather than a full day in the park. At least one of these tours ends in Port Elizabeth instead of returning to Cape Town.

That is a fair deal if Addo is one highlight among many. It is not the same as a safari day: less time among the elephants, and you see the park on the tour’s schedule. Our sister site compares these tours in detail — vehicle, inclusions, round trip or one-way — on its page Garden Route and Addo tours.

Road trip: add a safari day at the end

If you drive the Garden Route yourself, Gqeberha is the natural end point, and Addo is close by: the park’s southern gate is roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the city, and Main Camp about an hour. From there, a proper game drive fits in like this:

  • A full day from Gqeberha: a guided safari of 8 or 9 hours with the park fee included — lunch too on the safaris above. All full-day options are on the full-day page.
  • A half day from Addo village: if you stay near the park, a four-hour guided drive; the conservation fee is paid on top. Details on the half-day page.
  • Two days: the two-day Addo safari for travellers who want more than one day in the area. The positive reviews praise the guides and the elephant sightings; the two critical ones collected, both from 2026, found the tour impersonal and felt it involved a lot of driving for sightings of mainly elephants and zebras.

With a hire car you can also drive through the park yourself; our page self-drive or guided tour sets out what each way gives you.

Which way suits you?

  • Garden Route first, Addo as a bonus: a combination tour from Cape Town — see gardenroutetour.com.
  • Addo as a highlight in its own right: end your route in Gqeberha and book a full or half safari day there.
  • No time for the Garden Route: fly to Gqeberha and do Addo from there.

Timing matters too: the December–January school holidays are the park’s busiest weeks, and summer days in Addo can climb above 40 °C. More in the best time to visit.

Real traveller reviews from GetYourGuide.

Addo Elephant National Park: guided half-day safari from Addo village

★ 4.7 (211 reviews)

“A super-expert guide with whom we had the chance to see many animals. It was just the two of us and the guide in a closed vehicle that left from the village of Addo.”
Chiara · Italy · July 2026 · translated review

Reviewers of the half-day safari praise the guides and the close elephant sightings, several of them on rainy days. The critical reviews are mostly about expectations: several saw fewer animals than they had hoped for, mainly elephants and zebras — no half day can promise more. Three note that the start takes time: the meeting point is some way from the park entrance, and one found the time to be at the operator half an hour earlier than the listed start. One reviewer sat at the back of the vehicle and found the view limited. The SANParks conservation fee is paid on top of this safari.

Addo Elephant National Park: two-day safari

★ 4.3 (49 reviews)

“We can highly recommend the trip and would book it again at any time. The two days were fantastic. The Addo Elephant National Park lived up to its name. We have never seen so many elephants in one day. The overnight stay and the food were also top notch. Thanks to our guide John, who made this trip unforgettable!”
Ayla · Germany · January 2025 · translated review
“Everything was perfectly organized. The Afroventures tour guide, Sidwell, was super nice and told us a lot about the wildlife in South Africa. During the tour through Addo Elephant Park, Sidwell led us straight to the attractions and explained everything we needed to know in easy-to-understand English. …”
Uwe · Germany · March 2025 · translated review
“Totally said very good. Especially the guide John kindly waited me long time to pick up to start the tour. Thank you very much ! The Safari on 1st day is good. I enjoyed Many animals and birds. … River cruise of 2nd day is intresting. I spend a relax time and had some fun. Giraffe Trecking is exciting! Guides are very good at explain every thing in plain English. Thank you.”
Ishida · Japan · January 2025
Critical review
“We didn't get anything special; the whole tour was basically a mass processing operation. It was exactly the same as what passengers on cruise ships get. We would have expected something more personalized. We would not book this tour again.”
Verified traveler · Switzerland · March 2026 · translated review
Critical review
“The guide tried his best, but the entire program was a tourist trap: a day of endless driving around the park, during which the only sightings were the plentiful elephants and zebras. Very nice, but that could easily have been done in three hours. The hope of seeing lions or other animals was absurd given the small population in the park and the sweltering heat. …”
Ingo · Germany · January 2026 · translated review

The positive reviews, most of them from 2024 and 2025, praise the guides, the elephant sightings and the overnight stay. Both critical reviews collected are from 2026: one found the tour impersonal, much like a cruise-ship excursion, and one felt the park day involved a lot of driving for sightings of mainly elephants and zebras, with little chance of lions in the heat. For accommodation and dinner, check the product page.

FAQ

Can I visit Addo on a day trip from Cape Town?

Not realistically. Addo lies at the eastern end of the Garden Route near Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The tours from Cape Town that include Addo run for five or six days; alternatively, travel to Gqeberha and book a safari day there.

How much of Addo do the Garden Route tours include?

On the combination tours from Cape Town, Addo is one day of the itinerary, typically a game drive of around two to three hours rather than a full day in the park. Our sister site gardenroutetour.com compares these tours in detail.

Should I book a Garden Route tour with Addo or a separate safari?

If the Garden Route is the main event and Addo a bonus, a combination tour works. If a full game drive in Addo matters to you, end your route in Gqeberha and book a full-day safari from there, or a half-day safari if you stay near the park.

Where do I start an Addo safari at the end of a road trip?

The full-day safaris start in Gqeberha, where the park fee is included. The half-day safari starts in Addo village, close to the park, with the conservation fee paid on top.
