Every guided safari into Addo Elephant National Park goes looking for the same elephants. What separates them is the day around the game drive: the vehicle you sit in for 8 or 9 hours, whether lunch and the park fee are part of the package, and whether the pickup works for where you are. Our verdict rests on those points, and you can check each one on the product pages.
A closed, air-conditioned vehicle for the summer heat
From November to March, temperatures in the park can climb above 40 °C, and a full day in the vehicle is hard work in the heat. The Afroventures safari uses a closed, air-conditioned 4x4 with a window seat for every guest, and groups of up to 10. The Into Tours safaris also run in air-conditioned vehicles, the African Sightings safari in closed vehicles with windows that open, and the Addo Game Drives listing does not name its vehicle. Open vehicles give all-round views, but on this site only the Schotia safaris use them. The full-day comparison sets the vehicles side by side.
Lunch and the park fee in the package
All the full-day safaris from Gqeberha include the park entrance fee. Lunch is where they part: the Afroventures safari and the braai safaris include it, the Into Tours day safari includes a light lunch according to its description, and the Into Tours shore excursion includes no meals. On the half-day safari from Addo village the SANParks conservation fee is paid on top; the current tariff is on our home page.
Pickup at your hotel, the harbour or in Addo
The Afroventures safari picks up in Gqeberha, Bluewater Bay, Colchester and Addo, which covers both the city and the area around the park. It does not list the cruise port. For a port day, the Into Tours shore excursion collects you at the harbour, and the Addo Game Drives braai safari offers port pickup as an option. Gqeberha’s cruise season falls in the southern summer, so compare the 8 to 9 hours with your all-aboard time. More on the shore excursion page.
Time in the park
The park’s southern gate is roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Gqeberha and Main Camp about an hour, so the drive is part of every full day. If you are already staying near Addo, the four-hour game drive from Addo village keeps the day short. If one day feels rushed, the two-day Afroventures safari adds a night in 4-star accommodation, a boat trip on the Sundays River and giraffe tracking on foot. Travelling the Garden Route? See from Cape Town and the Garden Route.
Addo itself, not Schotia
Schotia is a private game reserve near Addo, not part of the national park. Its safaris are shorter and run in open vehicles, which can suit a port day with an early all-aboard time. The Schotia port safari does not enter Addo Elephant National Park, even though its booking link mentions an Addo shore excursion. If the elephant park is the reason for your trip, book an Addo safari. Addo or Schotia compared.
Elephants first, the rest as a bonus
Elephants are the sighting the park is known for. Addo is home to the Big Five, but no safari can promise them: lions turn up some of the time, while leopard and rhino are rare. Addo lies in a malaria-free area. Which month suits you best is on our page on the best time to visit.
